Non-Fullerene Acceptors for BHJ Solar Cells

Traditionally fullerene derivatives are used as electron acceptors in BHJ solar cells, as they have yielded the highest efficiencies up to now. However, they exhibit only weak absorption in the visible and thus do not contribute much to the photocurrent generation. The use of several alternative non-fullerene acceptors has already been reported, but efficiencies have not yet reached those of fullerene-based devices. Hence, we study the photophysics of non-fullerene acceptors in BHJ devices to better understand the efficiency-limiting processes compared to fullerene derivatives.
