Photophysics of Organic Solar Cells

A conclusive picture of the fundamental processes leading to charge separation and carrier recombination in organic bulk heterojunction solar cells is still missing. We study these processes in solution-processed polymer and small molecule solar cells by various time-resolved optical and electro-optical techniques, for instance, transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS), time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy, and time-of-flight (TOF) measurements. Recently, we have focused on low-bandgap materials, as they promise higher photocurrents, but often show additional carrier loss channels such as triplet state formation compared to mid-bandgap materials such as P3HT.
